Who was the first man to fly a heavier than air ship??
Question: Fly meaning: Leaving from the ground without help from external devices and flying for more than 100 yards.
The 1903 Flyer replica could not do it and the 1903 flight was made in secrecy.
Answers: If you are referring to what is conventionally thought of as a powered airplane, then the Wright brothers. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know much about the mechanics of flight. The Wright brothers invented the wind tunnel and a means for comparing the lift of various wing profiles. They were also the first to realize that a propeller needed to be an airfoil, without which powered flight would be impossible.
the wright brothers
The first recorded person is Otto Lilienthal.
1783 first french ballon flight also early glider flights
And the Wright brothers made over a thousand glider flights, if I remember correctly. doug hit it with the balloon though, since they are heavier than air.
AND to clarify, the Wright brothers were credited as the first to achieve powered & CONTROLLED flight.
Actually, balloons are considered lighter than air aircraft
THEREALCO is right, touche' AM
To Clarify a balloon:
In order for a balloon to float, it must displace more air (in weight) than it weighs. By displacing more air... the balloon is now lighter than the air around it. Therefore moves upward. The same is true in water, as both air and water are a fluid .
Otto was the first person to take flight, however because the Wright brothers were from America, they were credited first.... because remember we didn't have CNN to prove it happened on the spot.
................. debatable ................... officially first ............ is Wright brothers ....................... but all these 3 country disputes that their country man was first .................... French-German-Russian ........
my uncle
Alfred E Newman
MY MAMA. It started out lighter-than-air. Until she straddled it.
