Who should have the final say...? Mom/Dad, MomMom/PapPap, Teenager??
Question: My husband's parents are buying a new car for our daughter(early grad. gift). Of course, there are 3 different opinions on which vehicle is the best for a 17 year old. We live in Maryland (where it DOES snow). My daughter FINALLY decided on the VW Farenheit and my husband and I were OK with her decision. My mother-in-law was not...She told my daughter that the car was fuddy-duddy-ish and she did not like the fact that it was a 4 door and that it was yellow. My daughter LOVED the yellow. My husband and I were fine with all aspects of the yellow...although if it were my car...yellow wouldn't be MY favorite (but it isn't MY car). My father-in-law is REALLY pushing for a JEEP (which my daughter really dislikes). The other choice is a Mazda ?. I am not happy with that bec. it is not front wheel drive. The Jetta seems to have more safety features-plus gadgetry inside. As a mother, I feel that my daughter would be safest while driving the Jetta (husband agrees but it is HIS parents' $$$.)
Answers: If your in laws are giving your daughter a present that expensive, then that means that your daughter must have a really good relationship with her grandparents. If thats the case, then she should tell them how much she likes it, and then about the other features. Personally, I like the GLI Farenheit... the yellow color is awsome, and especially the interior. If the color is the issue... why not get a GLI? has all the same features, the only difference is the interior trim color, and the exterior color. If she liked the wheels on the farenheit, those can be added on to a regular GLI. The Price goes down a bit too (about $3,000-$4,000) and that might convince your in laws. I think in this case, its up to your daughter, along with your in laws... thats why she really has to say whats on her mind.
For a 17 year old, Mom and Dad should have final say.
If they are buying it your only option is to have your daughter talk to them about what she wants. You aren't paying for it so you really don't have a say so except to tell them that you don't want them to buy her a car.
First of all, your mother in law should at least let your daughter decide what she likes, not her. It would be your daughter's car, she will be using the car, let her choose.with of course
This is quite surprizing - that your daughter has made a choice that meets both practical driving needs and personal preferences, and that her grand-parents don't approve.
This is a gift from them to her. If they choose a vehicle and give it to her, it is up to them what they chose to give, but then up to her what she wants to do with it. (Once a gift is given, it is the recipients property. She could always trade it in on the vehicle she does want...)
I am leaning towards you and your daughter's decision. She has selected a reliable vehicle that she will be able to depend on for many years (perhaps into marriage and children?), and if your in-laws gave her a choice, they should respect it.
The other option is for her to let them know that she is extremely grateful for their wish to be go generous as to buy her a car, but it is a waste of money for them to purchase a vehicle that she doesn't want.
Jettas are very safe and would be my pick for a teen but keep in mind they are expensive to maintain synthetic oil and expensive parts. But in that price range i would HIGHLY recomend looking at the Audi A4 2.0 T or the 08 1.8T you can get an 07 2.0T Quattro AWD for about 28 grand if you dont need navigation and all those extras they are more reliable and even safer than the jetta. the A4 received the top pick for safety and with AWD is one of the best cars out there in the snow as well as being one of the most reliable German luxeries. i would seriously consider one.
Well I'll start at the main problem.
She Is your daughter, not your in-laws.
If they don't want your input on the car there shouldn't be a car.
Now on to the jetta,
As far as yellow goes, it's a high visibility color,
What that means is no I didn't even see her type accidents.
So yellow is good.
Second the fwd in snow is a good idea, 4wd or Awd is better,
I'd check if the Awd was available as an option on the jetta.
And last,
Saftey, reliability, and comfort (in that order) should be first concerns.
Not styling, or gadgets if it has a dvd player in the dash
there's one more distraction from actually driving.
Which in my opinion makes the car less safe.
I hope this helps,
J
Most Mazda's are front wheel drive, only the MX5 and RX8 are rear, and I would guess your in-laws are not looking to buy her a sports car. A Mazda3, Mazda5 or Mazda6 is a FWD car (the MazdaSpeed6 is AWD). All of their SUV/crossovers are either front or all wheel drive.
I would do your homework on VW/Audi's reliability ratings of late, they are very poor. Nice car, safe car, but not very reliable.
It is their money, but your daughter and since she's only 17, the car will be registered in your name, so you do have some say, I would think, your husband should chat with his dad about this.
So - back to the cars - if the snow is a big concern you might want to consider a Subaru, but I believe the most reliable and durable cars are made by Honda and Toyota, so I'd look at those - Civic, Corolla, Fit, any Scion (which is Toyota), cars like that.
Good luck!
Let me see if I understand what you are asking. You and your husband are the parents of your daughter who is 17. Some people who are not the parents of your daughter have a different view than you, her parents, about what car your daughter should drive. And you came to a site called yahoo answers to figure out who should have the final say? Really?
THE GIFT GIVERS ALWAYS HAVE THE FINAL SAY! its their money, not yours. they are buying your daughter a car but its not the right one???!!!!ITS A CAR FOR FREE!!!!!!!!ur spoiled daughter should be greatful her grandparents are getting a car for her and she doesnt want it cus its not yellow!!!?????my grandparents stop buying me gifts when i was 10 and even when they did buy me gifts, IT WAS ALWAYS UNDERWEAR!!!!!! if you dont like the car, then dont except the gift.
