I need help on what box to buy??

Question: i am about to purchase 2 12 JL Audio W3V3 and i dont know what kind of box to get. i definetly want ported i think but i dont want insane spl and no sound quality. from what i have heard, u need to get the right box if u wanna have jl subs. if u have the wrong box, there gonna sound like ****. a guy i know has offered to build me a box that will basically fill up the whole trunk of my 99 grand am and he said he is going to build it according to what the specs say about the subwoofer on jlaudio.com. it will be ported and the subs will be fired upwards in order to build the biggest box he possibly can for my trunk. is this right? does anyone have any other recommendations that would make my subs sound awesome? i know a friend who has a box built by this guy and his jl subs sound so good. very tight hard hitting bass. any other ideas?
Answers: Offhand I would say sealed....as the best type of box. All you really need to do is look at different types of boxes and see if they have the right amount of airspace for the speakers you have. Look at the speakers manual if they are new....or go to JL audios website to download a manual. There should be numbers for ported and sealed....The sealed number is always lower. It will how much each speaker displaces..or how much to subtract from the total boxes volume for the speakers basket.....Once you have done the simple math you should be able to figure out the best box for you....Sealed boxes hit harder...ported hit deeper and can be more efficient...If you like rock...sealed..rap ported...if you can find one that meets your space requirement.....

Find the biggest box you can that will fit in your trunk and see if it has the right airspace and then decide based on what you like to listen to...

Hope this helps.
Unless you have a custom designed enclosure built by a professional then it is best to stick with the manufacturer recommendations.

Without seeing the specs of the enclosure your friend is going to build it is hard to say if it is a good one or not. It seems wierd that it would take up the entire trunk of your car and that is to JL specs. When you are looking at building a ported enclosure it is very important to make sure the enclosure is built right. If it is not built correctly then the sound will be off and it can possibly damage your subs.

If you have a enclosure custom designed then the sound you are looking for can be altered a bit. Manufacturers often recommend enclosures that are good all around and they can often be slightly modified for better results depending on what you are looking for.

A ported enclosure can give good SQ if it is designed properly. The great thing is that you can get added SPL out of them with some good SQ if you have it designed just right. This does depend on what sub you have and if it can be put in a ported enclosure.

Good Luck!!!
