Sub box interior shape question??
Question: after all thats said about the size and internal volume of a sub box a question comes to mind. lately i've been making and installing ported boxes for my friends who like to boom and oftentimes i have to figure out the internal volume in relation to box size and the area i'm installing the into.
i have noticed that different box shapes of the same internal volume and port size have different tuning frequencies at the port which makes all the more harder to properly tune the port to my desired frequency.
i tried moving the port to one side of the box, then the other but never behind the sub and the frequencies seem to be more stable when the port is to one side of the box.
my question is... what is the effect of internal box shape and port position on a subwoofers backwave in a ported enclosure and how do we compensate for that in order to tune the box properly?
Answers: Sound Damping :
The point that you are talking about is sound damping which appears inside a sub box. The shape of a box appears to reflect the backwave which is pumped from your sub. it has pressure so if inside box is symmetrical the pressure will be distributed symmetrical . in non ported boxes the air which has been pumped inside should be damped in order not to reflect back to your sub's diaphragm. Once your sub kicks, both sides of your sub's diaphragm pumps air in 2 opposite direction with the same pressure lets say A and B. if there is no box A will neutralize B and there won't be any bass sound. Non ported box will damp B so A can work freely with no neutralizer . Ports will redirect B into A direction so there will be 2A instead of A. Ported boxes are much louder than non ported but bigger. In cars because the boxes are close to end of your trunk, port should be mounted in front of your box in order to work freely. Air traveling in high sound pressure is the key. Let the air inside travel easy to the ports. In this case sub should be mounted not in the center of a rectangle but a little higher for port to have more space to suck and push the air out.
