Fuel Indicator Light??
Question: I am one of thos epeople who waits 'till the gas hits E to fill up the tank. I have done it one too many times and the fuel indicator light is not warning me anymore. is there a way to fix it or reset it? I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu. Thanks
Answers: yes it could be a bulb but not likely on a Malibu usually the leveling sender goes out on the pump. usually caused by running the car low of fuel which you stated u usually do all to often GM designed the bucket pump (newer model fuel pumps) to hold fuel around the pump to keep it cool during operation when their is no fuel in the bucket the pump becomes hot which is electronic components worst enemy resulting in premature burn out
Take it to a repair shop and ask them to check if the bulb burnt out. If that's not it, it could be a sensor somewhere. Though it's a convenience item, it could indicate some kind of electrical issue somewhere else if it's not the bulb, so best to get it checked as soon as you can.
Maybe a burnt out bulb, more likely damage caused in the pump assembly by overheating the pump. If you run the tank too low, a portion of the in-tank fuel pump is exposed to the air, which leads to the pump assembly heating up and causing premature pump failure. If this is the case, your pump will likely fail sometime soon, so you can get the sensor changed at the same time.
could be a fuse
There is a service bulletin for instrument lighting and guages malfunctioning on Malibu and Impala. It also happens to other GM models. The remedy is to replace the instrument cluster. You may want t pay to have it professionally tested before forking over the dough. It is not a cheap part.
