1999 Camaro Z28 Roaring rear end noise....??
Question: The subject at the top is the problem.......what should be done to do way with the horrible noise? My friend who works on cars stated it's my gears and cheap parts....any other suggestions?
Answers: gm is retarded, first off. i am a Chevy guy and still do not understand wtf the engineers were thinking.
it's a weak rear end,i also put money on it's a used car and has never had the 3rd member checked out. you may need a new rearend or gears. i know the richmond gears howl, buti am not looking at the car...hope you find a better rearend
try lucas rearend fluid it may help
check fhe grease in it...if none put some in....
try to change the fluid and make sure you add the limmited slip diff. additive or use one that has it in it. the noise is probably just from dirty fluid.
There is nothing wrong with the GM 10 bolt that is in your car unless you have some pretty serious engine modifications.
Now to answer your question, it could be a variety of things. My first guess would be that you have a bearing going out. Have you tried to lift the rear tires off of the ground (jack stands under the frame and on a level surface) and put it in drive to make sure that the sound is coming from the differential itself and not from elsewhere in the drive line? If you are sure it is coming from the pumpkin, it will have to be torn apart to get to the root of the problem.
If it's a growling noise, it's probably a bearing issue. I have seen a substantial number of third and fourth generation F-bodies with bad pinion, carrier, or axle bearings. I'm not exactly sure why this seems to happen so frequently with F-bodies and not other vehicles that used the 7.5 & 7.625 differentials, but they have had bearing wear issues with them for years.
