More power from a 216 straight six.??
Question: I have a 1950 chevrolet buisness coupe with a 216 straight six. I want to go with the nastalgic look so i have decided to keep the in-line six in it. I have dual ford 49 carbs on a edmunds intake and split exaust headers. I was wondering if there was anything internal that i could do to make more h.p on pump gas. I sit worth the time and money to bore it over?? or port and polish or shave a little of the head?? Anyone who has had experience in this or could help me please reply.
Answers: this engine has a solid lifter cam and was never designed to rev over 4000 rpm. the right cam can help a lot.you could call isky. they will help you select the right one. this engine cannot be a real hot rod without spending a LOT of money.
That is old. Is it a flat head?
If not the combustion chambers will be huge and you should be able to bump compression with a nice plane of the head. Then get an aftermarket cam to use the carbs and header.
If it is a flat head- go get a cam, Isky Crane etc. Compression will be done with piston change.
235's are easier to tune but about 7 years newer.
ASE Cert Auto Tech, play with 49-53 ford flatheads, built a Blue Flame 6 replica in the 70's(235)
a port polish is always good, a new cylinder head would be a good investment, new camshaft and valve assembly, increasing the bore and stroke would give you a nice sound and a bit more torque, plugs and wires, distributor, light weight parts help out in the long run, racing chip. theres tons of mods you can do, new 4 speed drive shaft axel and wheels/tires will get you down the line a bit quicker. hope this helps, hope you have fun on your project.
