I have a 1971 camaro, that Im thinking of putting a 402 instead of a 454??

Question: My ? about engine pkgs was, did the 402 orginally come in the 1971 Camaro Z28, my car is a clone, I still wanted it to be semi factory. Thank you to all of you who responded to my original question.
Answers: In '71 the camaro was alittle strange.
The only big block in the camaro was the 396, but that 396 V-8 actually displaced 402 cid.

Here's the list of all engines for the '71 camaro
250 6 cyl
307 SBC
Three 350 SBC engines.. 245 HP, 270 HP and 330 HP
396 BBC
A 402 is just a 396 with an overbore. They were used a lot in trucks of that same period, and sometimes referred to, albeit incorrectly, as a 400 big block . Not to be confused with the later used '400 small block'.

A big block looks pretty much the same on the outside with only very subtle differences. Even die-hard GM fans have a hard time telling those differences. This being the case, you can dress up your 402 to appear as a 454 if you so choose.

Good luck and have fun with your ride!
Doug is right, and a 402BB will get better gas mileage to since it is smaller. Also try a turbo 200R4 for the over drive, and enjoy its benefits.
No, that engine was never available for a camaro.... the 402 was only made from 1970-1972... the same block as the 396, same stroke but a slightly larger bore.... I would put in the 402 if I could get a hold of one, very rare engine and unique. That engine was in Monte Carlos and Chevelles....
