2001 Chevy truck will not go into reverse....??
Question: We just purchased a 2001 Silverado crew cab 4-wheel drive. It was one owner and has 52,000 miles on it. We haven't even made our first payment on it and twice now it will not go into reverse. I know sometimes with everything being computerized there is a trick. The other thing is my Dad (who is a mechanic) went with us on a drive right after we bought it. He had it up about 45 mph and dropped it down into first gear to listen to the transmission downshift. He claims that transmissions are made to be able to do this with no damage to anything. My husband however is now ranting and raving that my Dad screwed something out. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Answers: he went down to first gear at 45. Are you kidding me? He probably did screw it up. then a transmission doesn't go into reverse is because one the sensors on it went bad. Have it checked out by a transmission shop.
Your husband is correct. You are not suppose to downshift into first over 25mph in those trucks. Nothing computerized about that. However, check the level of the automatic transmission fluid
the transmission should have a first gear lock-out for people like your dad who throw it down in first gear at 45.....
but if it for some reason DID go into first gear, yes he probably screwed it up,
The reverse gear is the first gear so yes he screwed it up by dew'n that.He worn the bushing on the clutch side on the spline and Today tranmissions are Not like the 70's and 80's transmissions...theres no more jamming gears anymore or the plastic bushings pop and crack, then just fall apart and dont work at all after a thousand miles.
The trans will not shift down gears until a set speed for each gear, so no he did not do damage to it. The downshift speed from 4th (45mph) to 1st is 30mph, meaning once the speed reaches 30 the truck will shift to 1st. THAT IS NORMAL.
These trans' have some problems with the valve bodies and solenoids. Both are internal to the trans. If any of these components are bad than you could have a intermittant problem not a constant one. If you never have reverse than I would say it is the Reaction Sun Shell sheared off, but you say it only happened twice.
Scan for codes and check the electronics first, no major disassembly required. If no luck maybe bring to the dealer.
