Did los angeles have a good public transportation system before??
Question: from what I heard when it wasn't congested...they had a good one...now I hear it you get's you nowhere and it takes too long...is it cause ppl (in california) think public trans.. are for poor people? there's yuppie ppl and regular ppl who take public transportation in nyc! not just for poor ppl.....why doesn't the governor like limit the number of ppl in the highway...(they already do that in some places ..prob not in california hah)
Answers: We did-I think it as called Pacific Electric until these following companies created National City Lines and bought up the rail system - then closed it down.
If you think about it, all transportation systems worked well, before when dad only worked and the family owned just one care, but now with an average of 3 cars per family, and 24hr work shifts and commutes... its alwful all over the US
The only time LA had a decent trolley and bus system is when cars were too expensive for families to afford. But yes, LA traffic is ranked the worst in the country... I hear ya.
Public transit worked well when people lived in places where public transit served. That's why they chose to live there, instead of in the middle of nowhere.
Then after World War II, people went Oh cool! We can use our AUTOMOBILE to live in the middle of nowhere! And suburban sprawl was born.
Now people live out in the suburban sprawl, in a house they bought BECAUSE it was only accessable by automobile... and now that gas is $3/gallon, they go Hey? Why doesn't transit serve the people?
Hello. Because the people moved away from it.
Move back.
It works fine in NYC, as you noticed. Every metro area has places transit works really well. Look where the transit lines are and find them and move there.
I thought West Hollywood and Pasadena looked quite good last time I was out there.
