I got in a car accident last night, hit and run. What are the chances of the police finding the car who hit me?
Question: I got in a car accident in residential section at 3am this morning. I just called my insurance at 2pm and filed a police report over the phone. What are the chances of the police finding this guy who hit me? Will the police go to the location of the accident and invistigate the scene or look for witnesses or anything like that? What do the police actually do in the situation, is the police report basically just paper work that will get me no where?
Answers: It depends upon how badly anybody was hurt.
If you have a dent in your car they will not look real hard.

If you have even a paint chip they will track that to make, model and year then check against local registries. Then they will look farther. They will have it on a notice list at the licensed body shops in the area.
The hopes that they find a bumper scraper is about as likely as finding your lost walkman that was swiped from the park bench beside you in 1999. It is just not a high priority case.
Unless you or someone else got the plate number, virtually nil.
I was a victim of a hit and run and couple months ago. All I knew was it was a blue pickup. 3 weeks later the police investigator calls me and says they got the guy, and there was a warrant out for his arrest. He didnt have insurance though so I was out of luck.
But just letting you know its possible. Keep your fingers crossed.
With a good vehicle description and eye witnesses it's possible. But I mean a good description, not a blue sedan . If you got a license plate number, or even a partial one, that will up the odds. Why didn't you call the police at the time rather than waiting?
It all depends on what kind of description the police have to work with. If you're in a southern border state (CA, AZ, NM, TX), it's probably long gone. You gave the driver an 11 hour window to get out of the area by not reporting to the police promptly.

If no one got the plate number, then there isn't anything they can do, unless u have a witness. The only time the police will really investigate is if there is injuries, or a fatality involved. I deal with hit and run claims on a daily basis, and sorry to say, but the person is usally never found. If you dont have a police report, and you file a claim with your insurance, there is a good chance your rates will go up because you dont have any proof that there was another veh involved. The report may useless for finding the person, but it will serve as proof there was another veh involved, and your rates shouldn't increase.
